Cake recipe with poppy seeds

The poppy cake is the classic cake, which can not be missed from any important event in a Romanian family. So, if it is the first time you prepare such a cake, do not worry, it is a very simple and easy to prepare.


For the dough:

500 grams of white flour with a high percentage of protein (over 10)

30 grams of fresh yeast / 10 grams of dry yeast

20 grams of sugar

200 ml. of lukewarm milk

25 ml. of rum essence

3 eggs: 1 whole egg / 2 egg yolks

8 grams of salt

1 sachet of valininate sugar

Peel a squash, grate it and squeeze the juice

130 grams of powdered sugar

100 ml. of oil


250 grams of ground poppy seeds

150 ml. of milk

2 eggs – 2 egg whites

80 grams of sugar

Peel a squash, grate it and squeeze the juice

1 pinch of salt

1 beaten egg yolk with 1 tablespoon of milk

Method of preparation:

In a bowl, mix the fresh yeast with 20 grams of caster sugar until liquefied. After, we will dilute everything in about 40-50 ml of lukewarm milk. We will leave the result for 10-15 minutes, until we notice blisters on its surface.

If you use dry yeast, mix it with the sugar and add 40-50 ml of milk gradually. Follow the procedure to leave it activated.

Beat the egg with a fork next to the 2 yolks, the rum, the salt and the valininate sugar, until they are homogenous. Add the rest of the warm milk. Put all the flour in a large bowl. In the middle, we will make room and add the composition of eggs and milk, and then the activated yeast and the orange or lemon peel.

The mixture will be mixed vigorously until it is homogeneous, about 5 minutes with the mixer. After that, we will add the powdered sugar, little by little, kneaded well.

After we have finished with the sugar, we will add the oil, gradually, kneading continuously. After the oil has been absorbed, we continue to knead until it forms a fine flake when we take it with our fingers, semi-transparent.

Grease a bowl with 2-3 drops of oil. After that, we will shape the dough into a shape and place it in a bowl, which we will leave to rise, at room temperature for an hour and a half.

On the fire, we will put the milk and the sugar in a saucepan, and then, when it boils, we will add all the ground poppy seeds and we will mix it continuously, until the composition thickens well.

Beat the two raw egg whites with the salt until they froth. Add to the cooled poppy seed mixture and mix.
