The most searched holiday destinations of Romanians are Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria, Italy, Egypt and Spain, and the most popular destinations for flights are Italy, Spain, Great Britain, Germany, France and Greece, according to Google searches.
“The summer of 2022 is the turning point everyone has been waiting for since the beginning of the pandemic: the time when people will start traveling again and take their vacations as they did before the pandemic, the long-awaited ‘return to normal’. A Google analysis of travel searches, conducted over the last 3 years, shows that Romanians have resumed their intentions to travel abroad, with the lifting of anti-COVID restrictions, and are moving to traditional summer vacation destinations – Greece, Turkey, Bulgaria. Private campsites and villas, accommodation options that offer more privacy and a lower risk of illness, are the ones with the highest increase in the post-pandemic period “, the analysis shows.
According to Google data, the intention of Romanians to travel in 2022 is higher than in 2019: the volume of searches related to travel (destinations, accommodation, transport) was 35% higher in May 2022 than in the same month of 2019.
The largest increase in accommodation searches was for international destinations: + 32% March – May 2022 compared to the same period in 2019. At the same time, accommodation searches in the country decreased by 2% in the same period.
The most sought after holiday destinations abroad of the Romanians are Greece, Turkey and Bulgaria, according to the search for accommodation. Romanians’ searches for international flights have also increased significantly this year: + 46% in the last 3 months compared to 2019. The most popular destinations for flights, according to Google searches, are Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom.
Returning to normal also meant an increase in interest abroad for travel and holidays in Romania. Google data shows that Germany, the United Kingdom and Italy are the countries from which most searches are made related to accommodation in Romania. These are also the countries from which the most sought after flights to our country are sought – their order in the top is different.
“Data from Google searches show that Romanians’ interest in holidays and travel has returned in 2022, with the lifting of anti-COVID restrictions. Romanians are turning again to destinations abroad, the most sought after countries being the already traditional ones for spending the summer holidays: Greece and Turkey. In the spring of this year, Romanians searched for accommodation in international destinations even more than in 2019. Searches for destinations and accommodation in Romania remain the majority, but the elimination of international travel restrictions has led to a decrease compared to 2019 “, said Oana Dumitrescu , industry manager Google Romania.
A number of trends that have grown in the pandemic continue to maintain their popularity even in the normal post-pandemic. These are accommodations that offer a higher degree of privacy and a lower risk of contagion. Google data shows that the largest increases in accommodation types are for camping and villa rentals – over 60% in the last 3 months of this year compared to the same period in 2019. At the same time, the demand for traditional accommodation options – such as hotels or resorts – is growing solidly by 33%.
