This ban is part of similar measures taken by its allies such as the United States and the European Union and “will help alleviate the possibility of Russian oligarchs circumventing restrictions on other luxury goods markets,” the Canadian government said.

The ban covers both the export of luxury goods to Russia and the import from that country.

Includes, for export, products such as alcohol, tobacco, certain textiles and sportswear, jewelry, luxury clothing and accessories, and artwork.

“Goods that could be used in the production and manufacture of weapons by Russia” are also banned by Ottawa.

For imports, Canada is banning seafood, fish and non-industrial diamonds from Friday.

According to the government, these products accounted for a commercial value of 76 million Canadian dollars (56 million euros) in 2021.

In addition, Canada is sanctioning 14 new people, including Russian oligarchs, family members and close associates of Vladimir Putin’s regime.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Canada has imposed sanctions on more than 1,000 people and entities in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus.

On Friday, Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly said she was concerned about the start of a new “stage of the war” that threatens food security around the world.

Ukraine is one of the world’s largest producers and exporters of grain, which are currently stranded in dead ports on the Black Sea due to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

“Every tonne of grain we can get out of Ukraine will save a life,” the head of Canadian diplomacy told AFP, noting that Ottawa is in talks with the country and Romania to help exports come out.
